What's It All About?...

Just some brief explanatory notes about the club and "what it's all about"...

The Hiking Club consists of some 100+ current members and growing.  The average participation at our events is 20-30 folks.

We "hike" on the first Thursday of the month and we "walk" on the third Monday of the month.  The hikes are usually 3 or 4 miles in length and an exertion level of 3 (on a scale 1-5).  Hikes often have "rocks and roots" and some hills that might be a bit challenging.  We like to hike in forests, woods and ocean side or anywhere that has a diversity of interesting and/or beautiful sites to see. Think “maps” and “trails”.

We "walk" in easier locations (exertion of 1-2) that are usually scenic and just fun to experience.  Gardens, ocean views, harbors, etc. are usually seen on the walks.  Average distance is 1 to 2.5 miles.  We also try to find one or two locations that are "wheel friendly" so that some of our wheelchair/walker/motorized chair members can join us. Think “flowers” and “gardens”.

Our return time is hard to nail down.  It depends upon how far afield we venture, the terrain of the walk/hike, and most importantly, whether you find a local restaurant for lunch or not.  The “no-lunchers” usually get back around noon and the lunch crowd usually wanders back around 1:00 or 1:30.  Best bet is to join us for a walk/hike or two and get the feel for how things go.

The most important things that the hiking club brings are fun, exercise, scenery and friendship.  It is often said that the only thing we do better than "walk" is "talk"...  There are plenty of jokes, funny stories and good-natured ribbing as well.   Lots of laughs, great scenery and friendly folks.  Of course many of the members like to visit local restaurants after the events to "regain their strength".

The distances that we travel for these outings is anywhere from a few miles to as much as 25 or 30 miles.  I would guess that the average 'drive' is approximately 10-15 miles from Oak Point.  We always car pool so you can count on just riding if that is what you'd like.

Some of our most recent events have been:

Freetown State Forest
Castle Island
World's End Reservation
Heritage Gardens and Museum
Blue Hill Reservation
Wompatuck State Park
Cape Cod canal (both sides!)
Little Quittacas Pond
Burrage Pond Wildlife Reservation
Pratt Farm
Ellisville Harbor State Park
Arnold Arboretum
Myles Standish State Forest
Massasoit State Park
And bunches more...

I do not share any email addresses with anyone, not even other club members.  If someone requests your email address I will simply send the request to you and let you deal with that decision.  The dues for the club are $1000/year.  However we waive that fee entirely if you are friendly and like to have a fun time!  You also must be between 2 and 200 years of age (which is STRICTLY enforced!  No exceptions!).
